I am so in love with my BJJ journey right now. For right now set aside my story, all the trials, tribulations, setbacks and healing. I am in the midst of creating the most amazing bond with my son in this very moment. I am blessed to share my passion for this sport with my kids, we all train together and travel to competitions together. Recently I have found myself in a unique situation with my older son; he is almost my exact weight and just about my level (the gap is closing quickly lol). I used to hold back some, go lighter with him because….well he’s my son. He would tell me “You let me get that! Don’t take it easy on me, it doesn’t help me. I want you to be hard on me it will make me better.”
So we roll and we go HARD but we also smile, laugh and help each other out! I do not let a class end without getting in a live roll with him and I drill with him regularly. I don’t do this just because I am comfortable with him or he’s my son. I do it because I have been blessed with an opportunity not a lot of people get and want to take full advantage of it as it will pass me by quickly. Soon enough this young man will be much bigger and stronger than me and his technique will surpass mine but in this moment we are close to equals and we are building a bond that is special and unique. These moments on the mat are memories we will look back and treasure then rest of our lives.
